Wine Grown in Catalonia

Catalan wine is wine made in the Spanish wine region of Catalonia. The term may also be used to refer to some French wines made in the Catalan influenced region of Roussillon. The city of Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and the focal point of the Catalan wine industry, serving as its primary consumer market, an exporting coastal port and source of financial investment and resources. The area has a long winemaking tradition and was the birthplace of the sparkling wine Cava, invented in the early 1870s in Sant Sadurni d'Anoia by Jose Raventos of Codorniu Winery. At the turn of the 20th century, the Catalan wine industry was at the forefront of Spain's emergence as a world leader in quality wine production, being the first Spanish wine region to adopt the use of stainless steel fermentation tanks. The area is also an important cork production region, with output aimed primarily at the region's Cava houses

Wine Country Discovery

Tour Code: MT-BCN-CAT-2
Duration: 5 Nights

Day 1 (Sunday) - An introduction to Wine and Wine Tasting
This unique tour begins in the High Penedes wine producing region with light tuition on the ABC of wine tasting led by one of our wine expert team members. This will be followed by a hands-on BBQ picnic lunch in a setting overlooking spectacular hill and valley scenery with views of vines, orchards, pine and oak tree forests. Accommodation in a charming rural hotel located in a quiet church village. The evening will commence with a two hour hands-on Spanish cuisine class given by your chef and hosts. We will learn to prepare, cook and later eat three of Spain's most well - known dishes.

Day 2 (Monday) - Appellations of Penedes & Cava
This morning we will visit two contrasting wineries. The first is located in the Low Penedes close to the Mediterranean Sea and as well as having an excellent reputation for it's range of hand-crafted wines it also has fame for producing sweet (Cabernet Sauvignon) and sour (Chardonnay) cooking vinegars. It is also the only winery in Spain to make a wine using 100% Cabernet Franc. After completing our tasting notes we will proceed to the market town and capital of the Penedes region, Vilafranca and visit of one of the world's great innovative wineries - Torres. During our visit we will witness the old tradition of winemaking working hand in hand with the very latest technology. Lunch will in a nearby Catalonian farmhouse (Masia). Some 95% of Spain's answer to Champagne is produced in Catalonia under the Appellation of Cava. The industry is dominated by the two mass producers Freixenet and Codorniu whose acrimonious rivalry has at times acted as a brake on Cava's progress rather than a spur to greater quality. Today we will visit a small family run winery which still produces cava using technology and skills no longer used to make cava.

Day 3 - Appellation of Conca de Barbera
After breakfast we travel to the Appellation region of Conca de Barbera and visit the medieaval town of Montblanc. The ancient walls are astonishingly well preserved, enclose 75% of the town and look as though they have come from the film set of El Cid! We will have ample time to discover the squares, churches, museums and palaces. Josep, Julieta and Ricard - three generations of the Foraster family will later welcome us to their winery. Only 50,000 bottles of wine are produced at Mas Foraster so expect something very special during the wine tasting. Lunch in Montblanc. Next it's a short hop to Poblet and visit of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Poblet - well known for the burial place of the Catalonian - Aragon Royal Dynasty. In 1989, Poblet Monastery decided to revive the Cistercian tradition of wine - making within its cenobium. The following year the grape vines were planted on 9 hectares of land within the walled enclosure of Poblet. Since 2000 wine-making has been done by the Abadia de Poblet winery (now part of the Codorniu group). We will have a tour of this small winery - emphasis on the cultivation and wine produced using the Pinot Noir red grape variety.

Day 4 - Appellation of Priorat
Today we will visit the Priorat region - an unusual combination of topography, soil and climate, a unique "terroir" and a one thousand year old wine making tradition initiated by the monks of the Saint Maria Carthusian Monastery (XII century) which during seven centuries gave fame and prestige to the Priorat wine. Our first winery visit will take us out to see breathtaking views of steep, slatey terraces home to over eighty year old Garnacha and Carinena vines. We will quickly appreciate why everything is done by hand!

Lunch will be followed by a short class on how to manoeuvre a segway. We will then visit the vineyards by segway or on foot if you prefer and return to the main winery for our winery visit and tasting. Overnight stay in a charming rural hotel nestled at the foot of the Montsant Mountains and surrounded by slate, vines, orchards and pine forests.

Day 5 - Appellation of Costers del Segre
While much of the grape harvest in this region is sold to the 3 mass producers of the Penedes, there are at least 2 excellent wine producers in each of the sub-regions. Our first wine tasting will be in the enchanting village of Vallfogona de Riucorb in the home of Jaume Bonet Minguella. Jaume has some 12 hectares of vineyard at some 400 metres above sea level ecologically cultivating mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Cabernet Franc. Soil is clayey and chalky and the climate can be best described as generally dry. Jaume makes a very limited production of young wine with Cabernet Sauvignon and an aged wine (12-14 months in American oak barrels and a minimum of one year ageing in the bottle before it is sold) using the same variety. After lunch we can walk (1km) to our Hotel Spa accommodation. Afternoon relaxing in the hotel - a climatised dynamic pool, jacuzzi, and an outdoor swimming pool will be at our disposal. Also available are Vichy, ciclonica and Kneipp showers as well as shiatsu, mud baths, massages and drainages, beauty treatments and wine baths. Dinner in the Hotel.

Day 6 - Appellation of Costers del Segre & Barcelona
Transfer to the town of Verdu and Appellation region of Costers del Segre. The soil is poor and consists mostly of clay and sand - ideal for handmade ceramics and wine making. Verdu is a small town but has many interesting things to see and do. During our stay we will learn about the past and present of the ceramic industry and see how the experts make their works of art. After, time also to explore the XII Castle, the Santa Maria Church dating back to Roman times and Plaza Mayor. There is also a Toy Museum which is worth a visit. Just before lunch we will participate in a cheese, bread and wine matching class. After lunch transfer to Barcelona. Once in the Catalonian capital you can extend your stay with us and join us on our Barcelona week end city break programme.
